A self-proclaimed 6th-generation rookie (?) girl group has finally achieved their dream of making an official debut. The main characters are none other than Girls’ Generation-HRS (HyoriSoo), a new unit composed of Hyoyeon, Yuri, and Sooyoung, members of Girls’ Generation who are celebrating their 20th anniversary since debut. On the 31st of last month, with the release of their digital single album Skibidi containing two tracks, they stood before the public once again wearing rookie name tags.
As previously introduced several times, the official launch of the so-called ‘HyoriSoo Project’, which originated from Hyoyeon’s YouTube content that started just for fun, has already generated all kinds of buzz online throughout its process. Although the starting point was clearly an event highlighting laughter, the official debut of HyoriSoo with top-tier results is creating a pleasant and fresh sensation all on its own.
The biggest feature of HyoriSoo’s official debut song ‘Skibidi’ is that it does not lock its genre and atmosphere into a single color. While the first half of the song is filled with 1990s Euro house dance sounds, the middle section onward features a dynamic, ever-changing melody progression reminiscent of Girls’ Generation’s representative hip-hop song ‘I Got A Boy’.
Though structured almost as if two tracks of completely different genres were merged into one, they blend naturally without feeling overly jarring, firmly establishing the song’s unique identity. Creative lyrics from producer KENZIE, who has worked with them since Girls’ Generation’s debut track ‘Into the New World’, alongside sounds created with major contributions from domestic and international musicians including Hwang Hyun (MonoTree), JinByJin, and Louise Lindberg, exhibit strong addictiveness from the moment you hear them.
While repeatedly utilizing the keyword ‘Skibidi’, which has recently been consumed as a global meme, lines such as “Make our own new path” and “The choice is yours” convey an independent and confident message no less empowering than ‘Into the New World’. A particularly notable point is that this new song does not force the three members’ distinct personalities into a single rigid mold.
Hyoyeon’s punchy vocal tone, Yuri’s stable vocals, and Sooyoung’s relaxed expressiveness create distinct textures that ultimately make the song’s overall feel even richer. Beyond being just a fun song, it sounds like proof that when the three come together, they can deliver music that far exceeds what fans ever imagined.
In the ‘Skibidi’ performance video released alongside the new track, the members of HyoriSoo, dressed in white sleeveless tops and blue jeans, comfortably handle high-difficulty choreography that continues without a moment’s rest. Watching them bring out the song’s charm through expressiveness and movement filled with individual personality immediately showcases the depth of experience expected from ‘rookie veterans’ with 20 years under their belt.
In another track, ‘Lowkey In Love’, retro sensibilities are highlighted to the fullest by combining the vibe of early 2000s Korean dance music with cheerful brass sounds. Despite being a digital single album containing only two tracks, they prove for themselves that the aura of legendary girl group members is alive and well throughout.
What makes HyoriSoo’s debut even more exciting is, without a doubt, their live stage. Appearing at the <2026 CassCool Festival> held at Seoulland in Gwacheon, Gyeonggi Province on the 22nd of last month—just before the release of the music—HyoriSoo heated up the atmosphere by performing a medley of Girls’ Generation hit songs in addition to their new track. Various fan-cam videos capturing the scene at the time quickly trended across YouTube and social media platforms, heightening anticipation well ahead of the official release.
Toward HyoriSoo calling themselves ‘6th-generation monster rookies’, fans who have supported them for many years showed humorous reactions such as, “2nd generation + 2nd generation + 2nd generation = 6th generation combined!”, while also offering strong support for the debut of this experienced rookie group with comments like, “It started as a joke, but now they’re writing a legend,” and “HyoriSoo brings guaranteed laughs when being funny and pure skill when doing their main job—let’s go to Coachella!”
In this way, HyoriSoo’s debut carries deep meaning far beyond a simple unit activity. Rather than placing their long-accumulated fame at the forefront, they first approached the public through the friendly side shown on YouTube and the unique personalities of the three members, connecting that expectation back to their music and performance.
What appeared to be a project started for laughs ultimately left behind the clearest takeaway: solid talent that naturally evokes the exclamation, “As expected of Girls’ Generation!” Adding fresh fun to familiar names, HyoriSoo’s new beginning demonstrates that even 20 years after debut, Girls’ Generation can still create brand-new stories.
